Living as Yourself
Trail notes
Season 5 Finale | With BJ Slager
What if the person you've spent your life becoming isn't necessarily who you are?
We've spent this season exploring the patterns we develop, the roles we assume, the expectations we inherit, and the ways our nervous systems influence how we experience ourselves and the world.
But understanding who you are and actually living as that person are two very different things.
In this Season 5 finale, Brandi Taylor welcomes BJ Slager back for a conversation about identity, sense of self, autonomy, and the freedom to grow beyond who we've learned to be.
Together, they explore an important distinction: Your identity is not necessarily your sense of self.
Identity can be shaped by roles, relationships, achievements, and the labels we adopt. Our sense of self asks something deeper: Who am I beneath those definitions?
And when we've spent years finding safety, belonging, or approval through a particular identity, stepping outside it can feel profoundly unfamiliar - even unsafe.
That's where the nervous system enters the conversation.
Even when we consciously want change, familiar patterns can pull us toward old behaviours, because they're what we've practised and learned to expect.
In this episode, we explore:
- The difference between identity and sense of self
- Why identifying with something can offer more freedom than identifying as it
- How conditioning and nervous system familiarity influence our choices
- Why letting go of an old identity doesn't mean rejecting who we used to be
- What happens to relationships when we begin living differently
- How to love someone without abandoning yourself
- Why authentic leadership requires autonomy rather than a need to be right, needed, or admired
- How ambition changes when achievement is no longer about proving our worth
- Why choice, awareness, and participation are essential to living as ourselves
One of the most meaningful realizations in this conversation is that transformation doesn't require us to burn down everything we've been.
We can honour the identities that helped us navigate life while recognizing that we no longer need to live inside them.
And perhaps we don't need to make ourselves, our past, or anyone else wrong in order to choose something different.
The question we're leaving you with:
Are you living as the person you've learned to be, or the person you actually choose to be?
As we close Season 5, thank you for being part of this exploration of power, visibility, standards, boundaries, capacity, relationships, and identity.
The journey doesn't end with discovering who we are.
It continues in how we choose to live.

Fear It Goes — Fear it. And let it go.
Leadership isn't built on strategy alone. It's built on the nervous system beneath it. The quality of your leadership, relationships, decisions, and legacy will never exceed the capacity of the system driving them.
If you're ready to move beyond survival and create sustainable success, deeper relationships, and a legacy that reflects who you truly are, visit fearitgoes.com to explore coaching, speaking, workshops, and transformational programs with Brandi Taylor.
The life you're trying to create doesn't require a stronger version of you. It requires a nervous system that finally knows it's safe enough to live it.
